KPop Demon Hunters sequel is coming

Success in the streaming world is often measured in fleeting moments, but KPop Demon Hunters has proven to be a rare exception. Netflix and Sony have officially confirmed that a sequel is in development, following the original film’s trajectory to becoming the most-watched movie in the history of the platform. Beyond the digital numbers, the film has achieved critical standing with nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the 98th Academy Awards. For a project that started as a licensing deal, it has evolved into a cornerstone of Netflix’s animation strategy.

The Directors Return

Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are set to return to the director’s chairs for the second chapter. This project marks the beginning of an exclusive multiyear partnership between the duo and Netflix, focusing specifically on writing and directing animated content. From a production standpoint, having the original creative leads return is vital for maintaining the specific visual language and musical integration that made the first film a hit. Kang noted that the world-building is only in its early stages, suggesting the sequel will look to expand the lore beyond the initial premise.

Box Office Numbers and Streaming Reach

The popularity of the franchise forced Netflix to break its usual tradition regarding theatrical windows. After premiering on the service, the film was released in theaters for a brief two day run in August 2025, where it earned over $19 million [€18 million]. This theatrical success, paired with over 500 million views on the streaming platform, turned a niche concept into a cultural fixture. In the context of the entertainment industry, these figures represent a clear demand for high-quality animation that balances specific cultural stories with broad, global appeal.

The Licensing Landscape

The business side of this sequel is as complex as the animation itself. While Sony Pictures Animation originally held the rights, the current deal structure means Netflix is the primary beneficiary of the sequel’s profits. This likely explains why Netflix recently committed over $7 billion [€6.63 billion] to expand its licensing partnership with Sony. It is a functional move to secure proven IP: Intellectual Property: rather than gambling solely on unproven original concepts. By securing the directors and the rights, Netflix is essentially building a home-grown franchise out of a licensed hit.

These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve.

We do not have a firm release date for the sequel yet, but given the multiyear nature of the new partnership, the production is likely already in the early stages of storyboarding. For fans of the intersection of music and animation, the return of Kang and Appelhans suggests that the high production standards of the first film will carry over. It is a rare case where the “looks over substance” worry is mitigated by a creative team that has already proven they can deliver both.
